Home School Excursions
Georgia is a great place to raise homeschool kids. Aside from the fantastic resources in place for homeschool families, the state has a wealth of history and natural wonders that do more for young minds than textbooks ever could. But when it comes to overnight field trips and educational vacations, Tybee Island is the destination for homeschool groups. Oceanfront Cottages offers special packages for homeschool groups and their teachers and can help connect you to local history and science experts. Here are a few subjects where we’re head of the class.
History
The Island’s strategic location at the mouth of the Savannah River has attracted visitors, colonists and invaders for centuries. Here, it’s easy to relive Colonial Georgia in nearby Savannah or experience our maritime past at the Tybee Island Light Station, watching over the seas since the birth of the nation. Just off island at historic Fort Pulaski, your young students can almost hear the shells falling from the Civil War siege that changed the science of military fortification forever. Then visit the Tybee Island Museum, built in the old Battery Garland that protected a wartime Georgia coast from packs of deadly U-boats. No matter what chapter of history your kids are studying, Tybee Island and the surrounding area bear living reminders of the past that make history books come alive.

Natural Science
Here’s where Tybee’s educational experience really shines. Our history is rich but our particular ecosystems can be found in few other places in the world. This part of the Georgia coast offers delicate estuarine ecosystems home to bottlenose dolphins and thousands of other rare and beautiful species. The creeks and tidal marshes are full of life and ripe for explorations. Additionally, Tybee is home to some of the world’s only salt marsh evergreen forests, which serve as a port of call for hundreds of species of migratory birds on their way to wintering or breeding locations. The Oatland Island Wildlife Center offers an in-depth scientific experience of the area’s ecosystems to students and nature enthusiasts alike.

Arts & Culture
The Tybee Island area is home to many renowned artists, chefs and writers, so you can expect a concentration of art galleries, museums and well-known restaurants celebrating our famous Low Country cuisine. And why not mix a little pleasure in with the educational experience? You can find some of the local Galleries in the On Tybee tab above in our menu.
